“Click-to-Call” The Latest in SMS Campaigns?

By Brian · Comments (0)
Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

It may seem obvious, and maybe you are already using this strategy with some of your clients, but one of the most powerful tools to use in a SMS campaign is a Click-to-Call phone number. By including a phone number as your call to action within a text message you are giving your customer the opportunity to respond instantly.

In an article titled “Political SMS Campaign Teaches New Dog, Old Trick” (posted by MobileMarketingWatch) we are shown how Scott Brown, a little known political candidate for the Massachusetts Senate seat, used SMS and the power of click-to-call to beat opponent Martha Coakley. Scott setup an SMS campaign, got supporters to opt-in and subscribe, and then sent out a message to those subscribers to call into a local radio show while they were interviewing Martha. You can see the actual text message that was sent to the right.

“The radio station reported that 90% of all callers into that show were Scott Brown supporters. This one text message proved without a doubt that using click-to-call phone numbers within an SMS campaign message was not only doable, but it also produces tangible results. Such good results that Scott Brown went on to win the election, beating his opponent Martha Coakley.”

Now you may be sitting there thinking…”Well, I don’t have a Senator as a client. How does using a Click-to-Call number help local shops and stores?”

Well, the article also provides some ideas on how to use a Click-to-Call number for a number of other  businesses.

For Example:

Salons/Spas - “Make an appointment by the end of the day today and receive 20% any services. Call (206) 334-4012 and mention this text message. EXP 1/1/12″

Restaurants – “Too busy to cook tonight? Call us (206) 334-4012 and mention this text message to receive 15% off any take-out order. EXP 1/1/12″

Entertainment - “Tickets are now on sale for Dane Cook LIVE, call (206) 334-4012 immediately as there are only 200 available. Will go fast!”

Conferences - “New rooms have just opened up at the Hilton across the street. Call Now to make a reservation (206) 334-4012 and mention the discount code: MXY for complementary breakfast.”

Retail  - “We just received a case of 1787 Chateau Lafite Bordeaux wine, very rare. Call us now to reserve a bottle for your private collection (206) 334-4012″

These are just a few ways you can incorporate a Call-to-Text campaign in your Mobile Marketing effort. If you have already launched campaigns using phone numbers to call please share them with us by commenting below. AND if you aren’t using Click-to-Call in your campaigns I strongly encourage you to try it out!

Text messages from your Church? Absolutely.

Here is a great article by Jeffrey Arnold, an industry expert in the field of “new media” marketing techniques for small business. Read the full article here.

Churches Using SMS Text Messaging to Engage Youth Groups (& Entire Congregations)

The most apparent group that can be moved to become more involved in the church is the young church goers. As the church utilizes sending and receiving information via SMS text messaging it will teach the youngest members not only more about the church but it will create a feeling of community. This method of communication is second nature to today’s youth, so it will make it easier for them to connect with and discuss things with the older church members.

Churches are now trying to move in another direction to add younger church goers to their flocks. Churches are now sending out SMS text messages to get information out and to ask their congregation questions via text messaging. While some churches have never latched on to the computer age and never contemplated sending emails, some churches have already advanced past the email stage using text messages for churches.

Text messaging for churches is a new way to stay in touch with the congregation that is immediate and effective. A pastor can prepare his sermon by sending out a question to his congregation via text and uses their responses in his sermon. It is a way to keep the congregation involved in church, while at the same time keeping them engaged listening for a response they may have given. It is a great way to get the pastor and the congregation on the same page.

Mobile marketing companies are utilizing text message marketing all the time so why can’t churches get their share of pie? Churches can use the text message to increase attendance on Sunday or just ask their congregation what they would like to see that would improve their experience in church.

Older members of the congregation may see SMS text messages as invasive or too high tech. Even the older members of the congregation will soon understand that SMS text messages could change the face of the church experience forever. The possibilities can be endless by using SMS text messages for everything from daily devotionals, to activity updates, to ad hoc giveaways to keep the congregation involved.

Another positive aspect of text messaging for churches is the process of collections for church programs or charities. Text messages can be sent out reminding the congregation of a specific charity or possibly reminders to bring clothes for Goodwill or Toys for Tots. SMS text messages are personal, so it is a great way for churches to engage their parishioners at a higher level.

How Schools Can Harness the Power of SMS Texts

By iZigg News · Comments (0)
Friday, October 29th, 2010

With so much communication coming out of schools, and busy parent lifestyles, it’s easy to see how important messages and notifications can be missed. From snow days and PTA reminders to the inexplicable absence of their student, parents need to be in constant communication with their child’s school.

By harnessing the power of SMS texts, educational institutions can reach out to parents by using a medium that doesn’t involve endless emails, time consuming phone calls or costly paper notifications. Schools can send parents instant notifications regarding their students: from a sick child to a canceled drama club meeting, parents can use their mobile phones to stay in-the-know about their students, and not miss out on important timely news.

“Using iZigg provides a great way for schools to remain in touch with parents,” says co-CEO and founder Brian Underwood. “By texting parents the information they need to know when they need to know it, both parents and schools can save a great deal of time and energy, and also feel assured they could be contacted instantly in an emergency situation.”

But that isn’t the only benefit. Schools can also benefit financially by reducing photocopying and printing costs, as well as staff time previously spent on parent communications via the phone.

Many schools and universities are already utilizing the power of mobile media to enhance both parental and student experiences, especially with regards to emergency situations. The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education recently decided to launch an emergency text-message alert system that all public colleges and universities will be required to enroll in. Additionally, Boston University officials launched their own text message alert system, which sends texts to both students and parents in the case of an emergency. A high school in Canyon, Texas has taken an even bigger leap, and uses a text messaging service to help prevent school violence. Students (and adults) are invited to text in crime tips to authorities.

So what other benefits can schools discover by utilizing a text message platform? Take a look at the following:

  • Schools can send mass text messages regarding school emergencies or closings, preventing the need for time-consuming parent led phone trees.
  • Schools can organize group lists to send parents and students timely updates about athletic teams, club meetings, fundraisers, parent teacher conferences, registration deadlines and any other important time-sensitive event (or cancellation) going on at the school.
  • Schools could create a substitute teacher list to reach out immediately in time crunch situations.

Mobile moving to the heart of marketing campaigns this holiday season

By iZigg News · Comments (0)
Friday, October 29th, 2010

Here is another great article on the transition taking place within the marketing and advertising world. By the 2010 holiday season, marketing campaigns will need to embrace all channels – mobile being the newest and most popular kid on the block.

Why mobile is a must this holiday season

By Dan Butcher, associate editor, Mobile Marketer, September 8, 2010

The huge potential of mobile will be realized this holiday season as brands go all in ramping up their multichannel marketing strategy during this crucial, challenging time of year.

Mobile calls to action featuring an SMS keyword and short code or mobile bar code can make holiday-themed traditional media actionable and measurable. Savvy retailers can get the word out about holiday sales via SMS, the mobile Web and branded applications, while brands can use various forms of mobile advertising to achieve their holiday-specific goals.

“I suspect when we all look back—and we will—to try to understand when mobile moved from interesting to nice-to-have to the heart of an all-channel brand program, it will be Christmas 2010 we all nod knowingly and nostalgically about,” said Thom Kennon, New York-based vice president of strategy at Wunderman, part of WPP’s Young & Rubicam Brands.

“There’s simply a whole lot of consumer spending going on [during the holidays] and mobile is the hero touchpoint to reach and activate consumers at almost every moment of behavioral truth across their shopping, purchase and fulfillment journeys,” he said.

“[Consumers’] mobile phone is with them at every single moment from Halloween through to the January sales—get into their pocket and purse!”

Mr. Kennon offered up a piece of planning advice: Hanukkah is early this year, Dec. 1-9, so marketers should use that as a mini-crescendo point bridging their Black Friday and Christmas mobile-centric holiday brand activation plans.

Breaking through the holiday clutter
During the holidays, consumers are bombarded with holiday-themed advertising of all kinds.

So how can a brand secure that real-estate ahead of and instead of its key competitors or other consumer alternatives?

The answer will range across a mix of consumer behaviors to trigger—everything from opting into SMS alerts, downloading a coupon application, opening a Bluetooth connection, sharing links with friends, and—here is where advertising is a no brainer—incorporating mobile, local and hyper-targeted keyword search into everything a marketer does this holiday season.

“Mobile media is a great channel to break-through the clutter,” said Maria Mandel, vice president of marketing and media innovation at AT&T Advanced Ad Solutions, New York. “It is unique because you can target your exact audience by demographic, contextual, behavioral and even location-based targeting.

“Location-based targeting is unique to mobile and can be a powerful link to point-of-sale purchase during the holiday season,” she said. “The holiday season is hectic for marketers and consumers alike—not only is it cluttered and competitive, but it is also a time when it is difficult to reach and connect with consumers.

“Mobile advertising and marketing can be used to effectively reach target consumers with the right offer at the right time and place.” Store or product locators, discounts, shopping/wish lists, gift suggestions, product information or tips can be great mobile tactics to leverage. Or even simply adding a mobile call to action makes radio, print, outdoor and in-store media work harder and makes it more trackable. Mobile alerts, offers and coupons can be a powerful way to reach last-minute shoppers. Read the full article here.
